Painting Courses on the Isle of Tiree - Immersive landscape painting experiences
Our painting courses on the Isle of Tiree are designed for artists who want more than a standard art holiday. They are for keen amateur painters who value time, attention and thoughtful guidance, and who are drawn to working in response to place.
Set against Tiree’s wide horizons, Atlantic light and ever-changing weather, each course offers the opportunity to slow down, look carefully and develop a deeper, more personal approach to landscape painting.
All courses are taught in person by Jen and are intentionally small, creating a calm, supportive environment with plenty of individual attention.
The approach
These courses are not about rigid techniques or producing finished show pieces. Instead, the emphasis is on learning to see more clearly, responding to light, weather and atmosphere, simplifying what matters in the landscape, and developing confidence in your own way of working. Teaching is structured but gentle, encouraging exploration, discussion and reflection rather than pressure or comparison.
The setting: Why Tiree?
Tiree is known for its exceptional clarity of light, open landscapes and strong sense of space. With few visual distractions and a close relationship between land, sea and sky, it offers ideal conditions for focused observation and painting. Many artists find that working here helps them simplify their work, sharpen their seeing and reconnect with what first drew them to painting.
Small groups, individual attention
All courses are limited to 6–8 participants. This allows time for one-to-one guidance, meaningful discussion and a shared sense of purpose within the group. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and supportive, making the courses suitable for artists who want to be challenged thoughtfully rather than pushed.
Courses currently available - Painting Light & Weather on Tiree
A five-day immersive landscape painting course for keen amateurs. This flagship course focuses on responding to Tiree’s changing light and weather through outdoor sketching, studio development and guided discussion. It is ideal for artists who want to deepen their understanding of landscape and develop a stronger personal response to place.
Practical details
Courses run in late spring and late summer, when light and weather are most favourable. All courses are five days unless otherwise stated. Accommodation and travel are arranged independently, with guidance provided.
Who the courses are for
These courses are ideal for keen amateur painters with some experience, artists who paint regularly and want to progress, and those who enjoy working from observation and landscape.
Joining a course
Places are limited and usually fill quickly due to the small group size. Participants are encouraged to book early to allow time for travel planning. Past participants are offered priority booking for future courses.
A final note
These courses are shaped as much by pace and place as by teaching. They are an invitation to paint with greater attention, confidence and enjoyment, supported by careful guidance and one of Scotland’s most inspiring landscapes.
